Lehtipiste’s LUE JA TIEDÄ. -campaign (“Read to know”) for World Press Freedom Day takes over the magazine sections of Akateeminen stores from April 27th to May 3rd, 2023. The campaign brings attention to World Press Freedom Day and highlights the importance of free speech particularly for printed newspapers and magazines.

In 1993, the UN’s General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day, following Unesco’s initiative. Celebrated annually, the commemorative day reminds us of the importance of freedom of speech. Freedom of press and freedom of speech concern not only the right to publish information but also every individual’s right to be informed.

Freedom of speech is not always self-evident, and it is of increasing importance in today’s world. Lehtipiste wants to promote freedom of speech. In 2022, Lehtipiste distributed 22.7 million magazines and 38.4 million newspapers to nearly 4,200 chain stores across Finland. As a distributor or single-copies, Lehtipiste upholds the right to write, publish and spread information and opinions, cooperating closely with 220 publishers and the entire domestic retail business.

“Free speech and free press are cornerstones of free democracy and a civilised society. We have taken them for granted for decades, but the brutal Russian attack on Ukraine serves as a grotesque reminder that these values are not respected even in some of our neighbouring areas. Lehtipiste wants to help reinforce democratic values” says Ville Melkko, Lehtipiste’s Commercial Director.

Campaign visibility

The campaign will be featured in Akateeminen stores from April 27th to May 3rd, 2023. Lehtipiste’s campaign for international freedom of the press and freedom of speech raises awareness for free speech and helps draw attention to situations where freedom of speech is limited.

The campaign also encourages people to share their thoughts on freedom of speech and take part in the conversation on social media with hashtags #sananvapaus #sananvapaudenpäivä #lehdistönvapaudenpäivä
