The single-copy sales of magazines increased by +1.1% in 2023. Average price was a moderate 5.35 euros which represented a raise of only 16 cents compared to the previous year. Growth was evident in the most popular themes, such as crosswords (+10%), house and garden magazines (+3%), crafts magazines (+8%) and comic books and children’s magazines (+6%). Crosswords remained the #1 selling theme. What’s more, consumers were particularly interested in special issues which have been the focus for publishers in recent years. Available for a limited time in the single-copy channel, special issues are entirely focused on a select theme. The ongoing popularity of crafts, and knitting in particular, was prevalent in special issue releases.

In single-copy sales, newspapers held their ground with a moderate decrease of –3.5%, even though the digital news format is rising strongly.

The value of single-copy sales of magazines and newspapers topped 100 million euros in 2023. The printed page is doing well alongside its digital cousin. The need to read and be informed remains strong, and printed papers remain the go-to choice for many consumers and their thirst for knowledge. In terms of volume, hypermarkets and other bigger markets, which also carry the largest selections, were the top outlets for single-copy sales of magazines and newspapers. This highlights the significance of the physical paper to consumers who still enjoy the tangible experience provided by printed media. The Finnish single-copy market continues on its multifaceted development path, retaining its strong position among consumers in the upcoming years as well.
