Magazines and books outside the scope of the EUDR – sustainability work as part of Lehtipiste’s day-to-day operations

Amendments to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) were made late in the year, and the regulation’s implementation was postponed by one year. At the same time, the vast majority of printed products were excluded entirely from the scope of the regulation and its reporting obligations. This concerns Chapter 49 of the HS/CN nomenclature, which includes, among other things, newspapers and periodicals, books, maps and calendars. The change was unexpected but very welcome for the industry.

Anja Sjöholm, Sales Director at Lehtipiste and Sustainability Coordinator for the Lehtipiste Group, notes that although printed products fall outside the Deforestation Regulation, Lehtipiste’s sustainability work will continue systematically in 2026 as well.

“Our sustainability work is guided by a sustainability roadmap that is being updated. We actively monitor the development of regulation and ensure that new requirements are incorporated into our operations in a controlled manner. The goal is smooth everyday operations for stores and a well-functioning distribution chain also from a sustainability perspective,” Sjöholm says.

At Lehtipiste, sustainability work is visible in concrete terms in distribution and logistics. In transport partnerships, the share of renewable fuels and electricity is being increased, and the transport network is being developed to reduce vehicle kilometers. At the same time, delivery volumes are steered more precisely to match demand, which reduces the number of products returned from stores and supports the efficient use of shelf and store space.

The Lehtipiste Group’s carbon footprint calculation for 2025 was carried out in cooperation with UseLess and was completed in February 2026. Total emissions were about 9,000 t CO2e (–7% vs. 2024), with the reduction driven particularly by lower transport emissions. The carbon footprint has been calculated regularly since 2020, and measurement supports the continuous development of distribution and logistics.

Sustainability work is carried out in cooperation with retailers and other partners to ensure that distribution is smooth, predictable and responsive to everyday needs.
